What is the benefit of using an Interceptor vs another network load-balancer?

    I think it is not worth to compare interceptor with other network load-balancer. As what i know about Interceptor and if i am not wrong about it, it works only in pair with steelhead or cluster of steelhead in network. Its benifits are:

    SteelHead Interceptor gives you real-time load balancing of your SteelHead appliances. You can add, modify, or remove appliances in real time, with no disruption to operations. Cluster up to 25 SteelHead appliances to manage up to one million concurrent connections with 40 GBps of throughput.

    With SteelHead Interceptor you can:

    • Manage connections based on source IP address, destination IP address, destination port, or the Virtual LAN (VLAN) routing the connection
    • Automatically and dynamically direct traffic to SteelHead appliances with the least load (when no rules are in place)
    • Trace activity so you can see the effectiveness of load balancing and optimization activities
    • Work with the full IP address and port transparency feature in SteelHead appliances for more visibility into network traffic
    • Honor all Quality of Service (QoS) markings, such as DSCP and IP Precedence, on all optimized traffic

    I guess, in this context, is that Interceptors are working out of the box with Steelheads. You just need to configure it and not to worry about functionality.

    Its difficult to compare Interceptors with other network load balancers. It depends on what you want it to do. It is important to note the the interceptor does not balance network load.... it balances the load on a cluster of steelheads. It is designed to handle 1 million TCP connections (2 Million with the new model) and share that load between a cluster of up to 25 steelheads. It looks at the no of connection to each steelhead and what is termed pressure on the steelhead to decide which steelhead in the cluster to use.
