Problem optimising System Centre Configuration Manager Updates

Ken Vance

HI All,

Our customer uses Microsoft SCCM to distribute win10 packages

We run RIOS 9.6.1 so we can get round the SSL renegotiation and 'null certificate' issues.

However, we are running into an issue with the initial client request to the server:

"enable pass-thru: did not detect a supported HTTP request method in RPCH multi-request mode, detected: CCM_POST"

Has anyone come across this issue with the Riverbeds?

Is there a solution that will not prevent optimising update traffic as its impacting the win10 rollout for our customer?

TIA

Ken Vance

    Hi Ken,

I haven't seen this error message before but this is I'd first disable the HTTP optimization to see if that's causing the trouble. On the client-side SH, you should configure a rule to disable latency optimization (set it to "none") and see if that resolves the issue.

    Thanks,

      Hi Blanco,

The 'CCM_POST' is the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager clients initial poll to the server to get the policies.

Being a non-standard HTTP request the Steelhead appears not to recognise it and passes it through.

As the SCCM updates are SSL/443 I will try firstly your suggestion, then a pass-through rule for HTTP only to the SCCM servers themselves.

I was wondering if anyone was successfully optimising SCCM and how they were dealing with this particular aspect

      Ken

        Hi Ken,

Is this the log message coming from the SH?

"enable pass-thru: did not detect a supported HTTP request method in RPCH multi-request mode, detected: CCM_POST"

If so, then this message would indicated that the traffic is bypassed at the HTTP layer (i.e. no HTTP optimization) but yet it should still benefit from SDR.  Are you seeing any data reduction for this traffic?

        Thanks,

        Blanco

            Hi Gents

            Any news on this ?

One of my customers is using a pass-througt-rule for SCCM updates since a year, due to bad experiances.

Now he rolled out Windows 10 and this updates are filling up his 20mbps WAN link . . .

            Thanks

            Rene

I have seen several issues with the same log, some of them are OA related and some of them are SCCM related.

Log does not say enough it means you are having a non-standard MS-Specific HTTP command which may be causing the issue. I would try two tests:

              1) Test when only the Latency Opt setting is set to None

              2) Test when Lat Opt is set to None, but Data Reduction Policy is set to SDR-M.

I believe first one will help, L7 blade is unable to optimize SCCM at all.

                Hi Ivan,

                Apologies for the delay.

We have tried with the latency optimisation set to 'none' and Data Reduction set to SDR only.

Preoptimisation Policy was set to none.

The optimisation still seems to choke on the HTTP command - with the connection going into passthrough:

"enable pass-thru: did not detect a supported HTTP request method in RPCH multi-request mode, detected: CCM_POST"

The traffic is SSL; with the HTTP command being seen above I suspect the decryption is fine and for some reason its choking on the HTTP request

I thought that if we matched the traffic (by server IP in this case) but didn't specify the preop policy it wouldn't try to use that blade (eg: HTTP or SSL in this case)  and just attempt data reduction - am I mistaken ?
